Hong Kong is undergoing two overlapping crises: social unrest over anti-government protests, and COVID-19. The media has linked these events in both objective subjective ways. While some liken the to COVID-19, others do opposite. This an intriguing real-world instance of source-target reversibility with interchangeable source target resulting apt variants. paper reports a survey study links between crisis perceptions aptness metaphor Participants (N = 93) rated 30 matched items on effects crises trust governance, interpersonal relations, economy, physical/mental health, Kong’s future. determined, for each participant, correlation coefficient reflecting perceived structural similarity, absolute/raw difference scores substantive similarity crises. They then explained which (or neither) constructed headlines depicting SOCIAL UNREST as COVID-19 or UNRESTwas more apt. Logistic regression analyses showed that i) was predictable from but not ii) worse preferred domain, only its experientially concrete aspects. exemplifies socio-culturally situated’ theoretical investigation how research can shed light perceptions.
